Know Thy Self
By SmartSamantha
A few years back, I decided to hire a personal coach to help me ponder my positives. It is helps in building an idea or career if you know your talents. Quickly came the task of balancing the big wheel of life; then came the “where are you going?” questions; and then we purchased some tests. I stared and stared at those tests, wondering, How will writing a word as fast as possible under 5 minutes provide life changing insights?
So I decided to hire my friend, Patricia. She was in-between careers herself, but she had previously worked in business development and I figured, well, that’s pretty close to personal development.
Patricia began to accompany me on my calls and helped formulate some new business ideas. But the most important thing she did was to listen. She listened when I talked with clients, potential clients, and business associates. She listened when I shared with her all of my ideas – the good ones and the not-so-good ones.
During this time, I also delved into my first charitable organization board position - and failed terribly. I had great ideas about the overall educational direction the organization should go, a long-range vision of what it could be. Unfortunately, the position that I had taken was one with a lengthy to-do list and lots of details. From this failure, along with Patricia’s feedback on my performances, I began to see my positives-- my pearls-- my talents.
Talents appeared for the first time to my eyes, although others had seen them for years. Being a “Big Picture Person,” I can successfully manage many big ideas – that’s what I’m good at. But when details abound, I fail.
Now when I enter into new projects or businesses, even charitable endeavors, I have a better idea on the best fit for my skills. I know what I’m good at, and where I’ll need the smarts of someone who’s good at the other pieces.
So whether it is taking some tests, hiring a coach or just asking friends and associates, start your own discovery. Knowing what your strengths and talents are – what they really are – is the key to getting and keeping your business or career going.
And then seek smart choices for the other talents/skills needed for success.
