Style Snippets:  Make a Big Splash in the Rainy Day-Chic Essentials

From SmartSamantha Designs

When you left the house you were looking polished, professional and dressed to the nines. In fact, you spent so much time perfecting your look that you just didn’t have time to check the weather report.

Oops.

Now the only style statement you’re sending is “soggy with a strong chance of strange looks from your team as they eye your runny nose, soaked hems, and dripping hair.” Swell.

Might be time to make some room in your closet for these chic rainy day staples.

A Statement Umbrella : Are you the type of person who waits for the heavens to open up before you invest in an umbrella—and then just one of those cheap ones you get from the gas station? Tsk, tsk. While inexpensive, those bargain brollies don’t have much lasting power, and trust us—battling with a broken umbrella that can’t handle the wind will leave you drenched and humiliated. Instead, invest in a top-quality umbrella with a powerful print. It could be a cheerful polka-dot pattern, a stunning floral print, or an inspiring art print from your favorite museum’s gift shop.  Not only will it stand up to the elements, but it will boost your mood and draw notice from your peers.

A Water-Resistant Trench Coat : Ditch the nylon ponchos and treat yourself to a good-quality trench coat made from water-resistant material. Not only is this a classic piece (think Audrey Hepburn!) that you can wear for much of the year, but it will keep your clothes dry while helping you look divine. Talk about a win-win!

Rain Boots : Wellies come in all sorts of fun prints these days, but save the playful ladybugs and rainbows for weekend wear (or better yet, your kids). Your best bet is a tall black pair that’s sleek and not too rubbery-looking—think of a rainy day version of an equestrian boot. Patent or croc-stitching can also help you make a big impact. Just avoid suede and anything that might get ruined!

A Printed Scarf : Want to give your blowout some extra protection? Grab a medium-sized silk scarf, wear it over your head, and tie it just under your neck. You’ll feel like a glam ‘50s film star, and your hair won’t be subject to the damage that a heavy hat can inflict.

What to Avoid:

Whites and Pastels : If you’re worried about inadvertently having a peak-a-boo experience, stick to dark and saturated hues.

Long Hems : Unless you’re wearing tall boots that give you plenty of height, avoid long, wide hems that skim the floor; they’ll easily get drenched or submerged in puddles. A slim-cut wool-blend trouser is a good choice.

Delicate Fabrics : Wearing suede in the rain is a recipe for disaster, and you should take care to avoid risking your delicate cashmeres and silks as well (especially since silk and satin reveal rain drop splatters easily). Also avoid embellished items or anything that won’t dry quickly, such as a heavy sweater.
